My Autoimmune Thyroid Journey

My autoimmune thyroid journey began in 2000 when a goiter (enlarged thyroid) was discovered during a regular yearly check-up with my primary care physician.  I had been having vague symptoms for years since the birth of my first child, and now the kids were pre-teens/teens. I experienced many things including flu-like symptoms that would come and go and were accompanied by pretty uncomfortable joint pain, nasal congestion, feeling cold, and fatigue.  I also had bloating, constipation and mild depression.

When the goiter was discovered the physician told me that I was "euthyroid" meaning that he didn't know why my thyroid gland was enlarged.  He sent me to an endocrinologist who I saw for several years.

Endocrinology

The endocrinologist prescribed Synthroid and had me return at various intervals to monitor the goiter.  At a certain point, he noted that the gland was getting larger and recommended having it removed.  I don't remember having sonograms and I certainly did not have a fine needle aspiration so there was no danger of cancer, and I don't remember any mention of that.

What I do remember is feeling that removal was somehow wrong, and I told him that I was going to get a second opinion.  I could tell that he didn't agree with what I said but that's okay, it was my right to do so.

That decision started me on a journey of research into diet, physicians and various other healers.  It eventually led me to yoga, Reiki and other forms of energy healing.

It's been an epic journey and it has not ended yet; actually I will be on it for the rest of my life.  However I wouldn't trade it for the world; I have made many, many changes in my life during this time and learned quite a bit about myself and my body.  And I am here to share it all with you now.
